The S5 Lens Insertion System™

The S5 scleral and hybrid lens insertion system was developed by Dr. Fayiz Mahgoub to eliminate many of the challenges that his patients encounter during lens insertion. The patent pending design offers patients two configurations to choose from, the S5 Mini™ and the S5 Inserter™ based on preference.

S5 Mini™

Hands-free lens stabilization:

  • Gives the user two free hands to hold their eyelids open which helps counter the human blink reflex.

  • Helps reduce spilling of the contact lens insertion solution which decreases the chance of air bubbles getting trapped under the lens.

LED light source:

  • Enables the user to more easily align their eye with the center of the lens during insertion.

Compact Design:

  • Convenient for use at home and on the go.

  • The height from the base of the device to the top of the lens holder is 5.5 inches (14 cm).

  • Optimized for lens insertion while sitting down.

Price: $199

S5 Inserter™

Hands-free lens stabilization:

This really is an amazing invention. I was so terrified about how I was ever going to be able to get these scleral lenses in when I first decided to move forward with them. This insertion system has made such a big difference in getting the lenses in. I was getting so frustrated with the air bubbles and when my doctor finally said let’s try this, I honestly thought I was going to cry when it went in so easily. I was like, did that really just happen? I can’t imagine what I would do without it.

I am a first-time wearer of contact lenses of any kind, so I was concerned that scleral lens insertion would prove to be more of a challenge than I might want to take on. Fortunately, my optometrist introduced me to the S5 Mini during my initial instructional session with her. The contrast in ease with other insertion methods could not be greater! There is a downloadable manual that clearly explains the use and care of the S5 Mini, and its inventor/developer – himself an optometrist – takes care to follow up with any questions you may have about the device. I am still adjusting to my scleral lenses, but the S5 Mini is making the process much smoother.

My doctor and I had three consecutive one-hour sessions to train me on inserting my new scleral lenses. These were unsuccessful due to my abnormally tight eyelids. She recommended I get this device so I could use both hands to hold my eyelids open. The first time I used the S5 Mini I was able to insert the lens in my right eye on the 3rd try, and my really bad left eye on the 2nd attempt! It’s a miracle, and now I can see thanks to this device. Everything about it is brilliant!

My son has Asperger’s and things get very frustrating for him, getting these sclera contacts in for the regular person is challenging having Asperger’s and shaky hands on top of that makes it a NIGHTMARE. I am so thankful for this device it is worth EVERY penny. Tommy has Keratoconus and cannot really see to insert these contacts so the light feature on it helps him focus. I would highly recommend this product.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Where does the name S5 come from?

The S5 name was inspired by the resemblance of the device’s light unit to the Saturn V rocket. The Saturn V was responsible for taking the first humans to the moon as part of the Apollo space program and was later used to launch Skylab, the first American space station.

2) Is this insertion system compatible with soft contact lenses?

The lens holder provided with the S5 insertion system is recommended for use with specialty lenses (scleral lenses and hybrid lenses) which utilize a rigid gas permeable material. It is not currently recommended for use with soft contact lenses. Please consult you eyecare provider to confirm which lens holders are compatible with your lenses.

3) Who is this lens insertion system intended for?

The S5 insertion system was designed to help all patients who wear specialty lenses by making the process of lens insertion easier and faster. These devices may be particularly beneficial to patients who are visually impaired or those with a disability affecting fine motor control of the hands and fingers.
